ROBERT JOHN BARCLAY was born 27 Mar 1891 in Burnfoot, Fairlie to parents Robert, a stone
mason, and Barbara Hunter (who married in Paisley
on 4 Dec 1868). He died at
home at 837 Crookston Road, Glasgow on 16 Jun 1958 (aged
67, single, retired gardener).
In the 1891 Census,
Robert, aged 11 days old, is living Burnfoot, Fairlie with parents Robert (46, b. Fairlie, mason) and Barbara (49, b. Nitshill,
Renfrew), siblings Jane (21), Alexander (14),
Thomas (11), Grace (7) and maternal grandmother Jane Pettigrew (76).
In the 1901 Census he
is aged 10, and is living at 10 St. James Street, Paisley with
his widowed mother Barbara (52) and siblings Alexander (24) and Grace (17),
and 3 boarders.
By the time of the
1911 Census, he is aged 20 and a gardener domestic at Treesbank Estate,
SERVICE RECORD On 13 May 1912, Robert J. Barclay enlisted in
the Territorials (1839, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, 8th
Btn.) – he was aged 21, a gardener, residing at Glendaruel, Argyll, and his
next of kin was his brother Alexander.
He was embodied on 5 Aug 1914, but was discharged medically unfit to
serve on 19 September 1914. No medal
