JOHN MCCALLUM was born 18 Oct 1898 in Fairlie, to parents Daniel, master joiner, and Janet Fife, (who married in Largs on 15 Apr 1880).  He died in Aberdeen in 1969.  

On 8 Jul 1931 at Holburn West Church, Great Western Road, Aberdeen, John (aged 32, Customs and Excise clerical officer, of Great Western Road, Aberdeen) married Mary Matheson Mackay.  The witness was Arthur James Parker Crawford, Holmwood, Fairlie, who is also named on the Fairlie Roll of Honour.  

In the 1901 Census, John, aged 2, is living Rose Banks, Fairlie with parents Daniel (49, house joiner) and Janet (43) with siblings Malcolm (18, house joiner), Allan (16), Christina (13), Daniel (11) and William (8)  

In the 1911 Census, aged 12, he is living Bay Street with parents Daniel (59, house joiner & undertaker, employer) and Janet (53, m 31 years, 7 children/6 living); siblings include Malcolm (28), William (18) and Allan (26) 


Enlisted 18 Nov 1916 and demobilized 3 Mar 1919.  His service record has a notation that Customs House should be advised if he died, was missing or discharged shore – possibly because he worked for Customs and Excise (his occupation on enlistment was civil servant).  His medal roll shows he received the British War and Victory medals.
