WILLIAM FIFE  MCCALLUM was born 18 May 1892 at Whin Cottage, Fairlie, to parents Daniel, a joiner and undertaker, and Janet Fife, (who married in Largs on 15 Apr 1880).  He died, aged 74, in Inverclyde Hospital, Greenock in Aug 1966.   On 26 Jun 1926 at Cumbernauld Village (aged 34, joiner, of Whin Cottage) he married Mary Ogilvie Rutherford.   

After the war, he worked in his father’s joinery business, taking over after his father’s death.  

In the 1901 Census, William, aged 8, is living Rose Bank, Fairlie with parents (49, house joiner) and Janet (43) with siblings Malcolm (18, house joiner), Allan (16), Christina (13), Daniel (11) and John (2)  
In the 1911 Census, aged 18 and an apprentice ship joiner, he is living Bay Street with parents Daniel (59, house joiner & undertaker, employer) and Janet (53, m 31 years, 7 children/6 living) with siblings Malcolm (28), Allan (26) and John (12)    

No medal index card was found, but his regiment is given on the plaque as ‘R.H.’ (Royal Highlanders), and his family advises that he served in Salonika with the Black Watch.  As he served overseas, he would have received the British War and Victory medals.
