DAVID BOYD MCAULAY was born 15 Sep 1897 in Bay Street, Fairlie to parents William, ship carpenter, and Elizabeth Hunter Boyd (who married in Largs on 2 Jan 1894).  He was christened 24 Oct 1897 at Fairlie Free Church.   

In the 1901 Census, David, aged 3, is living Clederion, Fairlie with parents William (34, shipwright, b. Fairlie) and Elizabeth (29), and brother Stuart (6, b. Fairlie)  

In the 1911 Census, aged 13, he is at Eskvale, Sandbank, Dunoon with parents William (44, shipwright at ship dock) and Elizabeth (40, m. 17 years, 3 children) and siblings Stewart (16, app. boat builder at boat building yard) and Thomas (7, b. Fairlie)
