Brother of William McLean

JOHN HENDRY MCLEAN was born 31 Mar 1897 in Largs to parents William Henderson McLean, a gardener, and Bessie Hendry.  He was christened on 09 Jun 1897 in Fairlie Free Church.  He died in Largs in 1965.  

On 10 Apr 1925 at the Clark Memorial Manse, Largs, John (aged 28, surfaceman, of Lilybank, Fairlie) married Helen Nicol Hendry .  

In the 1901 Census, John, aged 4, is living Rockland, Fairlie with parents William (46, b. Cove, Dunbartonshire) and Bessie (46, b. Tain) and siblings Catherine (15), Jane (12), Johan (10) and William (7)  

In the 1911 Census, aged 14, he is living Rockland Lodge, Fairlie with parents William (57, gardener) and Bessie (m. 27 years, 5 children) and siblings Jane (22), Johanna (20) and William (17)   In 1916, the Largs & Millport Weekly News reported that in civil life he was a gardener at Fairlie House.    


No medal index card was been found, but his regiment is given on the plaque as ‘R.F.A.’ (Royal Field Artillery?).  The Largs & Millport Weekly News reported on 10 Jun 1916 that he had been wounded and was in hospital in Edinburgh, having enlisted over a year previously and seen considerable service in France.   As he served overseas, he would have received the British War and Victory medals.

10 June 1916

News has come to hand that Gunner John McLean, R.F.A., has been wounded in the back, arms and legs, and is now an inmate of an Edinburgh hospital.  Gunner McLean, who in civil life was a gardener at Fairlie House, enlisted over a year ago and has seen considerable service in France.
