WILLIAM HENDERSON MCLEAN was born 23 Jul 1893 at Rockland, Largs, to parents William Henderson McLean, a gardener, and Elizabeth Hendry (who married in Hamilton on 16 Nov 1883).  He died of pneumonia in Ayrshire Central Hospital, Kilwinning on 04 Aug 1952 (aged 59, jobbing gardener, widower, of 3 Gogoside Drive, Largs).  

On 25 Aug 1919 at 34 Chambers Street, Edinburgh, William (aged 26, Private, 1st Seaforth Highlanders, of Glencorse) married by declaration Constant Ronia Bell (aged 29, military nurse). A daughter, Constant Bessie McLean, died 5 May 1921 in Greenock, and wife Constant died in Largs on 01 May 1950.  

In the 1901 Census, William, aged 7, is living Rockland, Fairlie with parents William (46, b. Cove, Dunbartonshire) and Bessie (46, b. Tain) and siblings Catherine (15), Jane (12), Johan (10) and John (4)  

In the 1911 Census, aged 17 and a shop assistant (butcher), he is living Rockland Lodge, Fairlie with parents William (57, gardener) and Bessie (m. 27 years, 5 children) and siblings Jane (22), Johanna (20) and John (14)    


His medal index card shows he received the British War and Victory medals, so he must have served overseas.
