WILLIAM NUGENT NEWCOMBE
was born 13 Feb 1900 at Railway Buildings, Fairlie, to parents Malcolm, railway night watchman, and Agnes Paton (who married in Ardrossan on 27 Oct 1893).  He died, aged 72, in Glasgow in 1972.   

On 09 Jun 1931 at 645 Alexandra Parade, Glasgow, William (31, marine engineer, of Curneil Villa, Fairlie) married Janet Cameron Fisher (33)  

He was a member of Fairlie Boy Scouts from the troop’s formation in 1912, and in Jan 1915 he was one of the Fairlie Scouts who carried out patrol duty for the Admiralty at Garmouth, Elginshire  

In the 1901 Census, William, aged 1, is living Railway Buildings, Fairlie with parents Michael (31, night watchman, b. Annan) and Agnes (30, b. Kilmarnock), with siblings Mary (5) and Sarah (3)  

In the 1911 Census, aged 11, he is living Curneil Villa with parents Michael (44, nightwatchman, Railway Co.) and Agnes (39, m 17 years, 6 children/5 living) and siblings Sarah (13), Agnes (8) and James (5)

9 January 1915          
Fairlie Boy Scouts:  Fairlie Boy Scouts left last Saturday afternoon to take up duty for a month at Garmouth, Elginshire.  The patrol is made up of Rev. D.C.C. Gollan, John Miller, William Newcombe, David Boyd, Robert Miller, Fairlie; D. McLachlan, West Kilbride.  On New Year’s Eve, the Troop was entertained to supper at Fairlie Craig by Lady Glasgow.  Her Ladyship and Mrs Cunninghame presented Cardigan jackets and mufflers, and Mrs Chevalier Parker, Mrs Chichester and Miss Parker, The Gondola, kindly presented helmets and extra blankets to the boys and also comforts to the Scoutmaster.

Fairlie Boy Scouts:  At a meeting of Fairlie Boy Scouts committee last Thursday evening, Mr. Tennant presented the members of the local Scouts who were on duty at Garmouth with war service badges:  Scoutmaster Gollan, Scouts John Miller, D. Boyd, Wm. Newcombe, D. McLachlan and R. Miller.
